What is hospice care?
Hospice care is specialized end-of-life care focused on comfort, dignity, and quality of life for individuals with terminal illnesses. It includes pain and symptom management, emotional and spiritual support, and care for the entire family.
Who is eligible for hospice care?
Patients diagnosed with a terminal illness and a life expectancy of six months or less—if the illness runs its normal course—may qualify for hospice. Eligibility is determined by a physician’s assessment and care needs.
Can hospice care be provided at home?
Yes. Most hospice care is provided in the comfort of the patient’s home, though services are also available in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and inpatient hospice centers.
What services does Holding Hands Hospice provide?
We offer nursing care, home visits, pain management, emotional and spiritual support, respite care, volunteer assistance, medication management, and more. For a full list, visit our What We Offer page.
How much does hospice care cost?
Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans typically cover hospice care 100%. This includes medications, medical equipment, and services related to the terminal diagnosis.
Will I receive a bill for hospice services?
You will not receive a bill for covered services if you’re covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or a participating insurance provider. We will confirm your coverage and explain any potential out-of-pocket costs during admission.
What if I don’t have insurance?
You can begin the process by calling us directly or completing our Set an Appointment form. We’ll coordinate with your physician and walk you through the next steps.
Do I need a doctor’s referral for hospice care?
While a doctor’s certification is required, you do not need a referral to start the conversation. Contact us, and we’ll guide you through obtaining the necessary documentation.
How quickly can hospice care begin?
In many cases, care can begin within 24 to 48 hours of approval. We work quickly to assess needs, complete
paperwork, and coordinate services.
Can I change my hospice provider?
Yes. You have the right to change providers at any time. If you’d like to transfer to Holding Hands Hospice, our team will help make the transition as smooth as possible.
Does hospice support family members, too?
Absolutely. We provide emotional counseling, spiritual support, respite care, and bereavement services to help families cope and feel supported throughout and after the journey.
How long do bereavement services last?
Bereavement support is offered to families for at least 13 months following a loved one’s passing. Services include individual counseling, support groups, and memorial programs.
Can I volunteer with Holding Hands Hospice?
Yes! Volunteers are essential in offering companionship and support to patients and families. Visit our Volunteer Page to learn more and apply.
Is support available after hours?
Yes. Our on-call nursing staff is available 24/7 for urgent needs. Call our main number anytime—day or night—and a nurse will assist you.
